This 2-hour online workshop explores how artificial intelligence (AI) can assist in research topic discovery. Participants will learn how AI can assist in managing information overload, exploring various AI-driven research and discovery tools. They will explore the role of AI tools in starting literature reviews and organising literature. Ethical AI authoring and useful detection tools will be discussed. Participants will also examine criteria for assessing research topics and research questions, highlighting potential risks and benefits of AI. By the end of the workshop, participants will have an introductory understanding of how AI can assist in handling information overload, facilitate topic discovery, and strengthen the early phases of doing reviews of literature.

Upon successful completion, participants should be able to:

  • Investigate how AI can assist in managing information overload in the research process.
  • Explore how AI-driven tools can support research topic discovery.
  • Understand the role of AI in emerging approaches to conducting literature reviews and topic discovery, recognising the advantages, limitations, and risks of utilising AI in these processes.
  • Examine strategies for organising literature using AI tools.
  • Explore ethical considerations related to AI-authoring and familiarise themselves with useful detection tools.
  • Explore assessment criteria for research topics and research questions, and evaluate the potential benefits of AI tools in developing research questions.
  • Learn how to develop and assess introductions to research and research proposals.
